MATHEMATICAL THEORY OF NETWORKS AND SYSTEMS
MTNS 98
Padova, Italy, July 6-10, 1998
Call for papers and first announcement
MTNS98 is the thirteenth edition of the International Symposium on the Mathematical Theory of Networks and Systems. MTNS is usually organized every second year and traditionally covers areas involving mathematics of systems and networks as well as emerging fields in engineering and mathematics with a potential impact on automatic control systems, and signal processing (see below a list of topics ).
MTNS98 will be held at the School of Engineering, University of Padova, Padova, Italy, from July 6 to 10, 1998. The symposium program includes 5 plenary lectures, 13 special topic invited lectures, 2 minisymposia and 1 minicourse. More than 500 contributed papers have been accepted for presentation.
On Sunday, July 5, the registration desk will be open from 5 p.m. to 8p.m. at the symposium site (viale G. Colombo, 1 - see the included maps).
The opening of the symposium will take place in the Aula Magna of the Palazzo del Bo, (via VIII Febbraio, 2, see map) the historic seat of the University of Padova at 9 a.m. on Monday, July 6, 1998. The access to the Aula Magna is through the old medieval courtyard (Cortile Antico). The opening lectures will be followed by a welcome reception at noon. The technical sessions will follow in the afternoon, at the symposium site.
The technical program and social activities of the symposium will continue through Friday, July 10. The registration and information desk will always be open during the technical sessions.
On Wednesday afternoon, a special Pilgrimage to Castelfranco (Riccati's hometown) has been organized.
Participants are advised to pre-register, at a reduced rate, before May 15, 1998. Upon arrival, participants should check their registration status with the registration desk.

Back to summary
Count Jacopo Francesco Riccati (1676-1754) spent most of his life in
Castelfranco Veneto, a charming medieval town located about 25 miles
north of Padova. A special historical session will be held in his
honour at the Teatro Accademico of Castelfranco Veneto on Wednesday
afternoon, July 8 (this is the free afternoon of the symposium).
All interested participants will be offered a bus transfer to
Castelfranco.
The organizer Sergio Bittanti will introduce the special guest speakers,
Brian D.O. Anderson, Peter Lancaster, and Jan C. Willems, who will
present tutorial-historical lectures on the role played by the Riccati
equation in systems and control.
Castefranco Veneto offers also unique artistic opportunities; in
particular the beautiful paintings by the celebrated Maestro Giorgione
in the main Church of the town.
The number of pilgrims will have to be limited by the capacity of
the Teatro Accademico. Interested participants should sign up at the
registration desk on Monday; the rule of first arrived first served will
be applied.
Back to summary
The Symposium will be held at the University of Padova. Padova (known in English as Padua) is a historic town founded in pre-Roman times and with a tradition for culture and learning. Its University, founded in 1222, is the second oldest in the Western world and has counted many famous scientists among its teachers and students: Cardano, Copernicus, Galileo, Harvey, Morgagni, Kepler, to name but a few. Click here for a virtual visit of the Palazzo del Bo. The city has a rich variety of historical monuments, beautiful churches and squares . It is a pleasure to simply walk around the old streets, some of which date back to medieval times.

Application areas:
Plenary, special topic, and minisymposia papers will be published in a volume of the Birkhaüser series "Progress in Systems and Control Theory." A volume of Proceedings will also be published, containing a selection of the papers presented in regular and invited sessions. Registered participants will be mailed both volumes. Participants interested in submitting their papers for possible inclusion in the Proceedings are requested to provide two camera-ready hardcopies of the final version of the paper at the symposium (the deadline is July 10.) Only the papers that the referees will value publishable will be included in the Proceedings.
Both volumes will be mailed to the registered participants after the Conference.
FORMAT OF PAPERS
The papers submitted for possible publication in the MTNS98 Proceedings
volume must be camera ready. A Word template and a LaTeX style file will
be available on the Web. (The format must be double column, point 10.
The page size of the Proceedings will be A4, European standard, 210x297
mm). The maximum number of pages is 4 (four). Please note that the
manuscripts should be final: no revision will be possible.

WEATHER
July in Padova is usually warm and sunny.
July,s averages: temperature 24.5ºC (76ºF), relative humidity 66%.
Riviera del Brenta
From the 16th to the 18th century the Venetian
nobility erected many villas along the Brenta riviera, the waterway from
Padova to Venice. The most significant of these is the neoclassical
Villa Pisani, with its 114 rooms and the magnificent frescoes by
Tiepolo. More a palace than a villa, Villa Pisani was commissioned in
the mid 18th century by one of the most powerful Venetian families, the
Pisani. Other villas along the riviera will also be visited.
Asolo, Possagno and Maser
These lovely small cities are part of an
itinerary which crosses a hilly landscape pointed by ancient churches,
small villages and vineyards. Asolo has been a resort village for many a
century, as the spacious villas dotted around the hillside attest. The
town is small but rich in remarquable monuments, its grandeur is due to
Caterina Cornaro, the Venerian-born queen of Cyprus who lived in Asolo
for almost twenty years. Asolo counted other illustrious residents such
as Robert Browning, Eleanora Duse, Gabriele D’Annunzio and many others.
It is nowadays the summer residence for many American and English
citizens. Possagno is the birthplace of the great sculptor Antonio
Canova (1757-1822) who built there the immense Tempio Church. The
Gypsothèque, containing the original plaster moulds of Canova’s
sculptures as well as statues, will be visited. Maser is renown for the
deligthful Palladian Villa Barbaro, which is itself quite small but
magnificent. The interior is rich of frescoes by Paolo Veronese and
Benedetto Caliari.
